The Grunds founded the company in a vacant grandma’s bedroom. All the family participates in production. The garden serves for drying of mats, yarn is stocked in the garage.
Our story began in 1990, just after the fall of communism. Mr and Mrs Grund wondered how to change their lives thanks to the newly acquired freedom. They wished to free themselves from vassalage in a state company, start their own business and be their own boss. Mrs Grund read an article in a magazine about housing saying that the market of Czechoslovakia at that time desperately lacked bathroom rugs.
Her husband seized on the idea immediately, and as a good textile engineer, he didn't hesitate to start looking for opportunities to produce these kinds of products. He found out that there was nothing like organised production of bathroom rugs. However, in a state company he found an old discarded machine for sewing yarn remnants from carpet production together. He borrowed this machine as a non-functioning one and intended for scrapping and repaired it and put it into operation during long winter evenings. Family members remember that the first line of a rug having been sewn made everybody very happy. Then, the whole family set off to sell the first pieces in the market place in Prague. They sold as many as 13 of them and the revenue covered the costs of the travel. Therefore, the family decided to continue doing business.
They started to sell their rugs in shops and the whole family participated in the production. They sewed rugs in the bedroom where the grandma used to stay, stored yarn in the garage and dried rugs, which had been painted with latex, in the sun in the garden. The products were sought after so much that the production was soon transferred into a nearby cottage typical of the Giant Mountains that had been rented to tourists until then. The company hired its first employees and the production for the hungry Czechoslovakian market grew successfully. In 1992 Mr and Mrs Grund mortgaged their family house and took out a loan for construction of their first factory hall where the first twenty employees worked.
In 1993 the company first decided to exhibit its products abroad, at Heimtextil in Frankfurt, which is the largest home textile trade fair in the world. It was a big challenge, and thanks to comparison with the international competitors the family was motivated to improve the yarn and engage designers. As early as in the following year the company's exposition at the trade fair engaged the attention of customers, most of which still buy products by Grund. This was followed by a hectic period of steep growth of tens of percent per year and by construction of new factory halls. At the end of this period in 2000 the company employed about two hundred people and, besides the production of rugs, the company also started to produce yarn in their own spinning mill.
In 2001 the company bought its first automatic sewing-in machine, which, thanks to its efficiency, managed to cope with the arrival of Asian competitors. The company also focused on development of their own collections and started to cooperate with world-famous designers, such as Luigi Colani. In 2002 the company reached a significant milestone as it decided to sell its products under its own brand Grund in markets all over the world. A unique presentation system, which you can see in many luxurious shopping centres in Europe and Asia, originated in 2008 with the help of Italian architects to promote our own brand.
At present Grund delivers goods to more than 40 countries, it has subsidiaries in Germany and the USA, it uses the latest unique technologies and cooperates with a number of top designers, who create unique and innovative collections that cannot be mistaken. We really appreciate the award that we received in 2013 when Grund was awarded the title "The Company of 2013" in the Czech Republic in a competition with several thousand companies. This strengthens our belief that the mission of our family business Grund is to spread joy through our products. Not only because they look great but because they are produced directly by us with love given to every single detail.
We also try to help those around us as much as possible; we support many social and sports projects in the Czech Republic and abroad. Because we believe that it is our responsibility to share the success that we achieved through our hard work together with our employees, customers, suppliers and also thanks to good fortune.
